The moral of this story is be careful where you place your Garage Sale signs.
BALLARAT Council will consider withdrawing hundreds of dollars worth of fines issued to a couple who unknowingly placed signs for their annual garage sale on council land.
Rose and Roger Young had made just $7 at a garage sale at their Mitchell Park home before being issued with infringement notices.
Mrs Young was distraught after City of Ballarat council workers told her she had been issued with the huge fines because signs had been placed about 30cms into council land.
Mrs Young said her husband had placed one sign at Learmonth Road before being told it was 'illegal'.
"I was a bit upset,'' Mrs Young said.
"I wasn't trying to do the wrong thing I've always obeyed the rules.''
She then asked neighbours if they would mind using their front yards to position signs.
"The next day Roger put the signs in the neighbours’ properties because they all said it was okay,'' Mrs Young said.
"But then one neighbour moved the sign to sit just outside his fence so he could move his tractor in and out and the council brought the sign back saying we were up for more than $300 in fines.''
City of Ballarat CEO Anthony Schinck said the council planned to meet with the Youngs to resolve the issue.
Mr Schinck said the council "could have"issued the Youngs with a $300 fine, but at this stage had only issued them with a $100 fine for one of the signs.
Mr Schinck said council would consider withdrawing the fine after speaking with the Youngs.

Personally, I reckon the council should fine anyone who does NOT remove their sale signs at the end of the day of the sale. Everywhere you go, there are posts, pillars, signs and balloons littering our streets from people too lazy to take down and remove their signage.

I don't agree with what Ballarat Council did to these people, I do agree with Brian
